ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
PROFESSIONAL
DIPLOMA (FULL-TIME) AND
PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMA (EXTENDED)
CANADIAN STUDENTS
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma
(OSSD) or equivalent with a minimum
overall average of 65% on six OAC or
Grade 12 ‘U’ or ‘M’ courses
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
- Academic standing equal to 12 years
of primary and secondary education;
and
- The secondary school qualification(s)
required for admission to internationally
recognized colleges/universities in
the student’s home country; and
- Proof of English Language Proficiency
MATURE STUDENTS
Applicants must
- be 21 years of age or older at the
start of the first academic year; and
- have been away from formal education
(secondary school, college etc.) for
at least the previous two years; and
- not meet the normal academic requirements
for admission; and
- satisfy Ongiara College that you
have the potential to undertake the
professional diploma course through
an Assessment of Prior Experience and
Learning process (APEL Portfolio);
or
- complete an Academic Bridging Program
offered by Ongiara College during the
six months leading up to the start
of the first academic year of the diploma
program
SUPPLEMENTARY REQUIREMENT
Prior
to starting clinical supervision in
Academic Year Three, we require students
to complete a Standard First Aid and
Basic Rescuer CPR level ‘C’ Certification
or Standard First Aid and Health Care
Provider CPR level ‘HCP’ Certification.
Any certification course should cover
CPR and choking procedures (adult, child,
infant and 2-rescuer), heart attacks
and strokes, AED intro, as well as topics
such as bleeding, shock, fainting, poisoning,
epilepsy, diabetic emergencies, allergic
reactions, burn accidents, heat and cold
emergencies, head, neck and musculoskeletal
injuries. Courses (approximately 14-18
hours long) are available from the Canadian
Red Cross Society and similar associations.
Please note that re-certification is
normally required every three years,
and valid certification must be maintained
for the duration of all clinical studies.
ADVANCED PROFESSIONAL DIPLOMA
Applicants program must have
a minimum of two academic years (60 semester
credits/90 quarter credits) education
at baccalaureate level, which is appropriate
preparation for graduate level work,
from an institution holding a provincial
charter and membership of the Association
of Universities and Colleges of Canada
or accredited by an agency recognized
by the U.S. Department of Education. All
courses must have a grade of 70% or higher
to be eligible for credit transfer. Please
arrange to have transcripts sent directly
to Ongiara College upon application. Your
application cannot be processed until
they are received. Ongiara College
reserves the right to make a charge for
any transcripts that need to be evaluated.
Non-US International students need to
contact the College Principal for details
of the admission requirements and process
and related administrative costs.
Licensed medical professionals with certification
requiring at least the standard of training
of a registered nurse or physician’s
assistant may be able to demonstrate
equivalency: please have your credentials
reviewed by the College Admissions Board.
US students should note that
certain State Acupuncture Boards require
that you have completed a full baccalaureate
level (Bachelor’s) degree before commencing
acupuncture and Oriental medicine studies,
rather than an Associate degree (2 years/60 credits). Further
information is available from the college and it
is ultimately your responsibility to check pre-requisites
and licensure requirements carefully with the Board
of Medicine or Acupuncture Licensing Board in the
state in which you plan to practice.
