A REMINDER BEFORE YOU APPLY TO ONGIARA COLLEGE

Ongiara College undertook a complete review of published provincial/state requirements in order to meet all reasonable criteria.  Further information is available from the college.   Whilst we will willingly assist students, it is ultimately the responsibility of each student to check pre-requisites, licensure requirements and scope of practice carefully with the Board of Medicine or Acupuncture Licensing Board in the province or state in which he/she plans to practice.
Canadian students should remember

  1. The three provinces that currently regulate acupuncture are: Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec
  2. Ontario is in the process of licensure

US students should remember

  1. that certain State Acupuncture Boards require that you have completed a full baccalaureate level (Bachelor’s) degree before commencing acupuncture and Oriental medicine studies, rather than an Associate degree (2 years/60 credits)
  2. that certain State Acupuncture Boards require specific bio-medical coursework to be completed before licensure (which should therefore be completed as pre-requisites or co-requisites in academic years one to two)
  3. acupuncture is currently regulated in 42 states plus the District of Columbia
  4. the remaining 8 states (as of July 2007) do not have practice acts for ‘lay’ acupuncturists: some medical professions have acupuncture within their scope of legal practice

While the Ongiara Professional Diploma of Acupuncture and Moxibustion curriculum meets or exceeds the published requirements of most regulated states, students will not be eligible to practice in states that require an integrated training in herbs, notably California.  California requires a combined acupuncture, herbal medicine and assorted TCM modality training and we do not meet that requirement.  Texas seems to have a similar requirement for Oriental medicine/herbs.  Students will not be eligible to practice in Florida and Massachusetts without further herbal training: both states currently allow graduates to complete herbal requirements separate to or subsequent to their acupuncture studies.

We fulfill requirements that many programs do not in that our course is taught over four academic years (36 calendar months) rather than three years/27 months.

As all educational establishments of acupuncture and Oriental medicine publicly state, we ask you to note that successful completion of a program of study at Ongiara College does not guarantee licensing in the four provinces of Canada and/or forty-two states of the U.S. plus DC that currently regulate the practice of acupuncture.  Requirements for practice vary widely and change all the time!  Each student is responsible for researching the laws and regulations for the province or state or in which they plan to practice.  It is vital that the student inform Ongiara College in a timely fashion as to the province/state where they plan to set up practice, as certain licensing boards require direct approval of the course of study.
